This is new territory and exciting for us as an Agency. Over the years we've worked with a number of clients in the tourism and hospitality sector including Windermere Lake Cruises, Out of Eden, Lake District Inns and others. Being based on the edge of the Lake District, we also see first hand how vital the tourism sector is to the local economy.
As a business owner and web developer, I've also attended my fair share of conferences both here in the UK and abroad, so I feel I've got a pretty good idea of what makes a good event.
So with this in mind, we've decided to host our own event. Meet Journey To:
Why host a conference like this?
There are several reasons for hosting this type of event. In many ways, it's an opportunity to experience being our own client and everything that entails; the pressure of selling tickets, securing speakers, promotion, social media management and commercial partnerships among others. The event has 3 main objectives though:
- Deliver a high profile, valuable event that allows attendees to learn, network and share information while promoting the area
- Introduce us to new connections from across the industry
- Build on our relationships with our existing clients in the sector
We'd be lying if we didn't say we also want to strengthen our own positioning in the travel and tourism sector as well. Not only that, but we'll be delivering the event in collaboration with many of our partners with whom we work with regularly, demonstrating that Cumbria has some fantastically talented individuals and businesses providing a range of complimentary services including branding, PR and video.
What's in a name?
As with many things, getting a good name for the event was critical. We went through lots of options, and in the end, of course it's not just about finding a name, but making sure there's a strong domain name to go with it. As luck would have it, the domain for journeyto was available, and nice and short to boot.
noun: an act of travelling from one place to another.
verb: travel somewhere.
So, whether it's a journey to the UK, taking a journey in your marketing, a journey in your organisation or business, a journey into the unknown, journey to wherever, a journey to the Lakes...it seemed to fit.
The Conference Venue
Journey To: will be taking place at the stunning Low Wood Bay Resort. Normally an event of this kind would be held in a city centre, but Cumbria is better connected than many people would believe. Being on the doorstep helps, but we genuinely feel a quick escape to the Lakes to talk about all things tourism related will make a truly inspirational event.
As the hotel approaches the end of a £19m refurbishment, it's also fantastic opportunity to see the hotel and with amazing views towards the Langdale Fells, why the Lake District was awarded UNESCO World Heritage Status last year.
Clearly making a success out of an event like this is dependent on getting good speakers to provide talks through the day. We're delighted to be launching Journey To with speakers including:
- Travel Editor from the Independent, Simon Calder
- Destination Manager for EMEA from TripAdvisor, Justin Reid
- Sales and Marketing Director from Windermere Lake Cruises, Jen Cormack
There will of course, be more speakers to be announced over the coming weeks!
We're expecting attendees to include owners of hotels and visitor attractions, group tour operators and destination management organisations (DMO's). So if you fall into that category, the event will offer fantastic networking opportunities throughout the day.
